How to use repetitive symbols for decorating a background

Using repetitive symbols to decorate a background. Perfect for re-using old artwork and creating new!

Today I'm going to share my creative process when adding details to the background! I usually fall into making random splashes of colors on the paper and then after some time I get back and add various details. Sometimes that ''detail'' is one and only symbol which I'm repeating over and over. But how to add that repetitive part of your drawing creatively?

Pick your detail.First of all - create your symbol. Pick that one thing that you are going to repeat. It has to be simple and easy to draw because you are going to get crazy with it! If it is hard to think about something specific try experimenting with shapes - circles, triangles (my favorites!). Try making a few sketches and picking the one that is the easiest.

I've chosen delicate leaves.

Use different supplies + change the colors. As always if the pattern you are making is repetitive try using different pens, pencils, markers and so on. It will create changing atmosphere on your page even if you are drawing the same symbol all over again! In addition, to this pick few colors and mix them when drawing. I've chosen a color combination that matches with my background and also used different pens, pencil and white pen.

Dive into the process. Most importantly get crazy with your detail! Rotate it, twist it, change it and make your pattern. The purpose of drawing this kind of paintings is to meditate and release the stress. You can be amazed, but everyone can make art! The important thing is not to be afraid of experimenting and trying new things. Make yourself a cup of coffee, gather all the supplies and find that creative spot in your home or somewhere outside where you could sit and get free on the paper!
